Editors Pick : Track Of The Week 7

You know what time it is! — Every Tuesday we’ve been hitting you with Editors Pick: Track Of The Week, for the past 7 weeks, and as a collaboration between Simply J and I, we decided that we’d do a throwback track at the end of each month. This week we are taking you back to 1996. Honestly we all remember the 90′s and for the most part, that had to be one of the best eras for music period; Hip Hop, R&B, Neo-Soul, and other genres as well.
This Hip Hop trio came out with a bang. I remember it like it was yesterday, my sister and I were in my grandmothers room sitting on her bed watching MTV. As the screen started to count down from 3 to 1, then leading into a small film, we were intrigued. The beat left us nodding our heads and jumping on my grandmas bed (knowing we’d prob get our asses whooped if she would have walked in, rotf). As catchy as the chorus was, we had no choice but to join in *sings “Oooh La La La, It’s the way that we rock when we’re doing our thang, Oooh La La La, It’s the natural LA that the Refugees Bring, Oooh La La La La La La Lalala La Laaah, Sweeeeet Thing” . . .
And now I present to you, Editors Pick: Track Of The Week (7) – “Fu-Gee-La” – The Fugees produced by Salaam Remi. You can find this highest-selling single on their grammy award winning album, The Score. The album in its entirety is one to remember, but this joint in particular had the ears of everyone. Wyclef, Pras, and Lauryn Hill left a dent in the Hip Hop community. We will never forget and will always wonder when they will reunite once again.
P.S. Lauryn, come back thanks !

Xzibit explains the importance of West Coast Unity
“I feel like if more of us held down more of our own, it would generate and circulate throughout the whole coast. We’d have a vibrate f***in’ scene here,” X told BallerStatus in a recent interview, adding that he, himself, got the co-sign of an OG to get on. “How did I get on? What happens if King Tee wouldn’t have come through and been like ‘Hey man, not only can you drink 40s, you can rap’ (laughs). King Tee came through and gave me a shot, and Tha Alkaholiks a shot. It’s gotta start somewhere.”
Here’s quick video courtesy of Baller Status with X to the Z lacin’ you Westside Knucklehads on the truth. San Diego pay attention!!!

Editors Pick: Track Of The Week 6

“I felt that if I just focused on the people that cared about me and my fans, get better and progress, I felt like I could get real far. I can explain a little bit more, its just about a lot of artist today, they feel like, they put a lot of emphasis on people, and we as a people, as people hating on them. If you get 100 emails you’ll focus on the 1 person who didn’t like you, instead of focusing on the 99 who give a fuck about you. So I just look at it like if I care about the people that got me here, we could get real far.” – Dom Kennedy opening words and concept of “From The Westside, With Love“; listening party 2010.
“San Diego What up? Leimert Park What’s cool?” — I can hear Dom‘s voice now, Dom Kennedy that is. Here at The Rise, we’ve been keeping an ear out and eye on Dom since he released “25th Hour“ a few summers ago. The best part about watching someone’s career is watching them grow as an individual, progress as an artist, and accomplish their goals. Dom has definitely set the bar, he works hard and no one can take that away from him or his team. Recently, us here at The Rise had the pleasure of attending Dom‘s listening party for “From The Westside, With Love” a project that will be hitting us via-online March 25, 2010. This is not the time to sleep, this project is one for the books. The vibe in Winston’s that night at the listening was incredible, the support and positivity were out of control, and you could tell by the look on Dom‘s face that he felt like he was winning, and he was. While everyone danced, took a sip, photographed, filmed, I sat there in awe and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one. You thought the production on “Future Street/Drug Sounds” was cold? wait to you hear “From The Westside, With Love“. From the beginning to the end, pure greatness. Well while I’m over here ranting and “Best After Bobby” is in heavy rotation, this weeks Editors Pick: Track Of The Week belongs to “Choose Up” by Dom Kennedy featuring Poly (prod. by LAUSD). “Choose up, what up!?”
Special thanks to Dom and the JBC fam for always showing us love, we appreciate you and are proud of not only what you are doing amongst yourselves but with your community. Keep spreading the cool, the rest will follow.
