This week I’m bringing it back to the West Coast (four finger up & two twisted in the middle w/my locs on & my chucks strong *starts c-walking). If you were born and raised on the West Coast, then when it comes to music you know not to leave this legend out of the loop, David Blake, a.k.a. DJ Quik (Mc and Producer) is back at it again with his upcoming project: The Book Of David. It’s been about 5 solid years since he’s put out a solo album, but his most recent work lies between collaborations with The Fixxers back in 2007 (Midnight Life) and Kurupt in 2009 (BlaQKout).

This Weeks Editors Pick: Track of the week goes to “Nobody” – Dj Quik featuring Pomona’s own Suga Free (While you Bullshittin’ !!!) which is the first leak off The Book Of David. The production on this gets a thumbs up, well honestly, Quiks production has always made me move even when I didn’t want to. Suga Free’s delivery always makes me laugh, and his lyrics = Jokes ! To be simply put, it’s ‘a feel good’ track. The end of the track is my favorite, download and you’ll see why!

There is no set date on when The Book Of David will be released, just keep looking back for more information here on The Rise.

“I did it overnight, it couldn’t happen any quicker
Y’all know them? Well, fuck it, me either
But point the biggest skeptic out, I’ll make him a believer
It wouldn’t be the first time I done it, throwin’ hundreds
When I should be throwin’ ones, bitch, I run it”

It is week four of Editors Pick: Track Of The Week and thus far, I have chosen tracks from albums that have a release date set for the month of March. Although previously released and posted, this weeks pick is “Over” by Drake Produced by Boi-1da and Al Khaaliq. ” If this track doesn’t show his growth as an artist, then I don’t know what to tell you and I can’t wait for that to reflect in the album. “So Far Gone” killed the mixtape game (being that it was better than most peoples albums), so DO NOT attempt to dig up someone else’s name who has been nominated for a Grammy without an album because IT HASN’T HAPPENED. History in the making, true story. Not everyones a fan, just give respect and props to where it is due and I’ll let you slide. I can hear the critics now, ha-ha !

Well on another note, “Thank Me Later” hits stores March 30th and of course we are all looking forward to it. The artwork has yet to be released, however there is a possible cover (not yet confirmed) that has been making its way through internet waves. The final track list has not made it through either, but there are a few confirmed tracks that will give you an idea what he’s working with below:

“Afrika Boombatta” (feat. Lil Wayne)
“Fireworks” (Produced by Crada & Noah “40″ Shebib)
“Light Up” (feat. Jay-Z) (Produced by Tone Mason & Noah “40″ Shebib)
“Over” (Produced by Boi-1da & Al Khaaliq) — 3:56
“Shut It Down” (feat. The-Dream) (Produced by Omen & Noah “40″ Shebib)
“The Two” (feat. K-os)

“Coldest Winter” – Kanye West (video)

First time hearing this song back when Mr. West dropped 808 Heartbreak, I honestly loved it, it was something new to my ears and to the hip hop, rap, pop, or ‘whatever you want to call it’ game. It’s been some time since that track hit waves and for this video to come out caught me a little off guard. Directed by Nabil, a great artist, this video has its quality. Many may think “my, what a strange and eerie video!” well, did you really think art would be missing from a piece produced for Kanye? Everyones a critic, and with that said, some of the comments I’ve read this morning consisted of “WTF?” “He did give his soul to the devil” and “This isn’t hip hop”. How judgmental. haha ! Then again, people will always be people. Let’s try something different today, let’s see beauty in a different light and past what we see with our naked eye.

Today, which marks a new edition of Editors Pick: Track of The Week, I’ve decided to take it to the streets, to the hive where the WU reside. Well, not exactly, see the trio have yet to call themselves anything and probably won’t (Meth, Ghost, Rae *hint hint), but for now I will call them the “Tré of WU”. This weeks pick is “Our Dreams” – Method Man, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah, which carries royalty, featuring a looped sample from “We’re Almost There” the first track on MJ’s fourth solo album Forever, Michael . This track hit the net late January and the anticipation is killing, but it is good to know that “Wu-Massacre” drops March 30, 2010 along with Drake’s “Thank Me Later” and Erykah Badu’s “New Amerykah, Part II: Return Of The Ankh” (which features “Jump In the Air (Stay There)” last weeks Editors Pick: Track of the Week). For us Wu fans this release is a big deal, I mean, how long have we been waiting? sheesh ! but thanks to the recent “Avenging Eagles” mixtape (presented by DJ Mathematics, Def Jam, & Wu-Tang), waiting hasn’t been so bad. I’ve left you with the artwork and tracklist for Wu-Massacre, as well as the behind the scenes footage for “Our Dreams” below; enjoy !

Editors Pick: Track Of The Week 1

Being that this is our first Editors Pick: Track Of The Week I had to start it off with a BANG ! and if you think other wise, you can go fall in a trench somewhere [jk]. Erica Abi Wright a.k.a. Erykah Badu will be releasing New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) March 30,2010 and I’m sure I’m not the only who is itching for this fifth album of hers. Erykah has hit us with two leaks, one off of the upcoming project and the other a web only exclusive, 1. Window Seat (Produced by Erykah Badu and James Poyser) *said to be her first single off the album*, and Editors Pick: Track Of The Week 2. Jump Up In The Air (Stay There) ft. Lil Wayne and Bilal (Produced by Erykah Badu, RC Williams and Jahborn).

At first when seeing Lil Wayne as a featured artist for “Jump Up In The Air (Stay There)” I was thinking to myself, “SELF, I hope he doesn’t F**K it up!” and he didn’t (well not that bad, haha). Truthfully I miss Carter II Dwayne Carter, not saying that he’s not doing his thing now, however, I’m just a bit tired of him yelling on tracks and being so wasted that you can’t understand a damn thing he’s saying.

Ok, enough of that sidebar, Erykah is killing and I’m glad she’s back. The beat will get you up out of your seat and the lyrics will have your ass somewhat confused, asking yourself “are they saying they’re high?” rotf. Well enough of me yapping, I’ve provided you with the track list and video below so that you’ll know what to look forward to. Enjoy !

Track listing
1. “20 Feet Tall” (Produced by Erykah Badu and 9th Wonder)
2. “Window Seat” (Produced by Erykah Badu and James Poyser) – 4:25
3. “Agitation” (Produced by Erykah Badu and Shafiq Husayn of SA-RA Creative Partners)
4. “Get Money” (Produced by Erykah Badu and Karieem Riggins (drums), Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner (bass), James Poyser (keys), Tommy Trajlio (guitar), Mike “Chav” Chavarria (mooger fooger) (Contains an interpolation of “Can’t Turn Me Away,” by Sylvia Striplin)
5. “Don’t Be Long” (Produced by Erykah Badu and Ta’Raach)
6. “Love” (Produced by Erykah Badu and J Dilla)
7. “Umm Hmm” (Produced by Erykah Badu and Madlib)
8. “Fall in Love” (Produced by Erykah Badu and Karieem Riggins) (Contains a sample of “Intimate
9. “Friends” by Eddie Kendricks.)
10. “Incense” (Instrumental) (Produced by Erykah Badu and Madlib featuring Kirsten Agnesta (harp))
11. “Out My Mind Just in Time (Part 1) (Undercover Over-Lover)” (Produced by Erykah Badu featuring James Poyser (keys))
12. “Out My Mind Just in Time (Part 2)” (Produced by Erykah Badu and Georgia Anne Muldrow)
13. “Out My Mind Just in Time (Part 3)” – [6]

“Make you smile again” – Sin

Sin did it again and like he said to me just a few seconds ago on twitter “There’s WAY more where that came from“, his new mixtape “The Day After Love” drops tomorrow and I fortunately had the pleasure of receiving “Make You Smile Again” in my inbox about an hour ago. This is one of my favorite beats, if you’ve heard Quik’s album “Under The Influence” (-50 ways-) you know that I’m talking about. Sin did it justice.
